  • Marcus Daniell

    FOUNDER & EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

    Marcus is an Olympic bronze medalist tennis player from New Zealand with 5 ATP titles, quarterfinal appearances at both Wimbledon and the Australian Open (twice), and numerous caps for the NZ Davis Cup Team. He has been Giving Effectively since 2014. On January 4th, 2021, Marcus took the Giving What We Can pledge to donate at least 10% of his annual winnings to effective organisations for the rest of his life.
    Alongside his tennis career, Marcus has completed a B.A. from Massey University in Psychology and Spanish and has been awarded the Arthur Ashe Humanitarian Award for his work with HIA, joining recipients such as Nelson Mandela and Roger Federer.

  • Hugo Inglis

    MANAGING DIRECTOR

    Hugo is a triple Olympian and a veteran of the New Zealand Black Sticks hockey team. He has been considered one of the best hockey players in the world, and vice-captained the NZ team at the Tokyo Olympics. Hugo has successfully juggled his sports and professional careers having worked in startups, consulting and banking. He also received an MBA with distinction from the Heriot-Watt Edinburgh Business School.

    Hugo is High Impact Athlete #2, signing on to join Marcus as a pledger athlete. He has been giving effectively since 2018.

  • Cam Watts

    COMMUNICATIONS DIRECTOR

    Cam is an ex advertising creative, working at three top 10 global ranked agencies over a decade long career, before turning towards creative direction for social good. Cam is an HIA pledger, and came on board with the team in early 2023.
    Outside of helping to expand HIA’s influence, Cam holds on to his High School dream of windmill dunking the basketball - he still has a long way to go.

  • Erin Routliffe

    COMMUNICATIONS ASSOCIATE

    Erin is a professional tennis player from New Zealand/Canada, with a career high doubles ranking of 33. She won the 2021 Palermo WTA and was a mixed doubles quarterfinalist at the 2022 Australian Open. She has also played multiple ties for the New Zealand Fed Cup Team. Prior to her professional career, Erin attended the University of Alabama, where she was a 2x NCAA Champion and graduated with a Bachelors in Public Relations, with a minor in communications. Erin is also involved in High Impact Athletes as a pledger, and is passionate about helping bridge the gap between athletes and effective charitable organisations.

  • Kevin Rassool

    OPERATIONS & COMMUNITY

    Kevin is an international level 400m sprinter, coach, and HIA pledging athlete.
    Off the track, Kevin has almost a decade of experience working in for-purpose organisations, ranging from health & education to food security and existential risk. Kevin has also completed a Bachelor of Science and Masters of Engineering (with Distinction) from the University of Melbourne.

  • Jack Lewars


    Jack is the Executive Director of One for the World, a non-profit that encourages students and young professionals to pledge 1% of their income to effective charities. He previously co-founded the UK non-profit School of Hard Knocks, which uses rugby and boxing to help people realise their potential. While there, he helped scale the charity to employ thirty staff and help around 1000 people each year, and also worked with a wide range of professional sporting ambassadors. He has been committed to effective giving for over 10 years, after taking the Giving What We Can Pledge at university, and was formerly a member of the National Panel of Rugby Referees in England.

  • Kara Linse Buckley


    Kara is a Senior Advisor, consulting at the intersection of impact and innovation in sport. She has advised leaders at the U.S. Olympic & Paralympic Committee, LA28, Riot Games, and two startups backed by Nike Founder Phil Knight. Previously, she was a Global Director at Visa, leading partnerships with Olympians and Paralympians. She is also an author, publishing her first book titled “Pure Grit” with co-author Lily Collison in 2021.
    Kara is a big fan of effective giving through Givewell rated charities. She studied Business and Spanish at the University of Oregon. After a decade in New York and San Francisco, she currently resides in Bend, Oregon with her husband and three awesome kids.

  • Luke Ding


    Luke studied medicine at Oxford University, subsequently switched to a career in finance and held a number of senior management positions at Natwest and Merrill Lynch, and became a senior partner at fund management firm Brevan Howard. He now engages full time with his philanthropic activities in parallel with pursuing his business interests. He is a keen supporter of many organisations associated with Effective Altruism. Luke has sponsored many health care initiatives in developing countries, as well as organisations safeguarding future generations. He is based in London.

  • Tom Dery


    Tom founded the marketing company M&C Saatchi and was appointed Chairman of the Worldwide network in 2009. Earlier in his career his airline experience included Qantas and Ansett Airlines, where he was deputy GM. He was also managing director of DDB in Melbourne. In the nonprofit space, Tom has been the Chairman of Australian Cancer research Foundation, AIME, Queenwood School, Sydney Dance Company, and sat on the Strategy and Risk Committee of Sydney University.
    Tom holds a Commerce Degree (UNSW), an MBA (Stanford), and was a Resident Fellow at Harvard in 2015. In June 2015 Tom was awarded an Order of Australia by the Australian government: “For distinguished service to the not-for-profit sector, particularly to cancer research, through the development of corporate governance structures and major fundraising initiatives, to the performing arts, and to business.”

ADVISORY TEAM

  • Charlie Bresler


    Charlie Bresler co-founded The Life You Can Save with Peter Singer, a non-profit dedicated to reducing extreme poverty and its devastating effects on over 700 million people globally, for eight years. Through his financial support and leadership, Charlie helped develop the organization from the ground up. He continues to support the organization as an involved board member. After earning a PhD in Social and Clinical Psychology from Clark University, Charlie became Director of Behavioral Medicine for The California School of Professional Psychology. He was then recruited to The Men’s Wearhouse where he ultimately became President. He stepped down in order to fulfil his long-standing desire to work directly on social and economic issues, especially wealth inequality.

  • Lewis Bollard


    Lewis currently leads Open Philanthropy Project’s strategy for Farm Animal Welfare. Prior to joining Open Philanthropy, he worked as Policy Advisor & International Liaison to the CEO at The Humane Society of the United States (HSUS). Prior to that, he was a litigation fellow at HSUS, a law student, and an associate consultant at Bain & Company. Lewis has a B.A. from Harvard University in Social Studies and a JD from Yale Law School.

  • Peter Singer


    Peter Singer has been named the world’s most influential living philosopher. He is considered one of the founders of both the effective altruism and animal rights movements, and his books The Life You Can Save and Animal Liberation continue to bring countless people into the worlds of effective giving and animal welfare respectively. Peter has taught at the University of Oxford, La Trobe University, Monash University, and since 1999 has been the Ira W. DeCamp Professor of Bioethics in the Center for Human Values at Princeton University.

  • James Snowden


    James leads Open Philanthropy Project’s program in effective altruism community building (global health and wellbeing). James spent his last 5+ years as a researcher and program officer at GiveWell, where he led the organization’s work on policy and advocacy. Before GiveWell, he worked at the Centre for Effective Altruism and as a strategy consultant at L.E.K. Consulting. He holds a B.A. in philosophy, politics and economics from Oxford University and an M.Sc. in philosophy and economics from the London School of Economics.

  • Caroline Daniell


    Caroline is an Of Counsel for Richman Law Group, a nonprofit focusing on environmental and animal welfare issues. Caroline is also pursuing her PhD at the University of Auckland focusing on philosophy of law. Prior to returning to academia, Caroline worked in corporate law in NYC. She has also worked in the fields of criminal justice reform, family law, and done pro bono work for a farmed animal welfare non-profit. Caroline is a meditation and yoga teacher and is passionate about finding impactful ways to reduce suffering in the world - effective altruism being a powerful mechanism to do so. She holds a Masters Degree from Harvard Divinity School and a Juris Doctor from Columbia Law School.
